01 — The story

The story

The War Memorial in Dharamshala honours soldiers who died in the conflict of 1947-48, the wars of 1962, 1965 and 1971, and United Nations peacekeeping missions. Its centrepiece is a row of three black stone panels, each 24 feet tall, carved with the names of the fallen.

The memorial sits in a pine grove, reached by paths that wind through landscaped lawns. Close by is GPC College, an institution from the British period, and the nearby markets sell Tibetan crafts such as prayer flags, thangkas and statues, along with shawls and scarves of local wool and silk.
