01 — The story

The story

St. John in the Wilderness is an Anglican church at Forsyth Gunj, between Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, set among deodar trees. Dedicated to John the Baptist and completed in 1852, it follows the neo-gothic style and has stained-glass windows from Belgium, a gift from the wife of Lord Elgin. Elgin, a Viceroy of British India, died in Dharamshala in 1863 and lies buried here.

The Kangra earthquake of 1905 killed many people, and a number of them are buried in the churchyard. The building mostly withstood the quake, though its bell tower fell. A replacement bell, cast in England by Mears and Stainbank in 1915, was shipped out and set up in the grounds.
