Vizianagaram Fort stands in the middle of Vizianagaram town. Maharaja Vijaya Rama Raju, also known as Ananda Raju I and founder of the Vizianagaram dynasty, began it in 1713 on Vijaya Dashami, and its building marked the start of his new kingdom. Over time it grew into the political, administrative and cultural centre of the state.
Within the walls are gateways, palaces, temples and other royal and public buildings. The old royal court, with marble statues at its entrance, now holds a museum of royal objects, while its upper floor is used by a women's college. Another large property beside Alaknanda Palace, set in open grounds and gardens, now serves educational institutions and defence training.
Just outside the fort is the Ganta Stambham, an eight-sided clock tower 68 feet high, built in 1885 and modelled on Big Ben in London.
