01 — The story

The story

Vishram Ghat is the best-known bathing ghat on the Yamuna in Mathura and an important site for followers of Krishna. Its name comes from the legend that Krishna rested here after killing the tyrant king Kansa, and devotees feel his presence still lingers at the spot.

Pilgrims use the steps to bathe in the river and to perform religious rites. The main event is the evening aarti at dusk, which brings thousands of people each night to watch the lamps, devotional chanting and floral rangoli designs along the water. The Dwarkadhish Temple stands nearby, making the ghat a natural starting point for exploring the old town.
