The Government Museum in Mathura, founded by F. S. Growse in 1874, is among the oldest museums in India. Its collection of more than 6,000 objects concentrates on the Kushan and Gupta periods, with sculptures, relics from the 1st to the 6th century CE and paintings, and it is a regular stop for archaeologists and researchers.
Among its best-known pieces are a Yaksha figure believed to belong to the Mauryan age and a headless statue of the Kushan king Kanishka, often held up as a model of Kushan sculpture. The colonial building that houses the galleries is itself worth a look for its design and layout.
