The story

Vilvaranyeswarar Temple stands at Tirukollampudur, historically Koovilambur, in Tiruvarur district. Shiva is worshipped as Vilvaranyeswarar and his consort as Soundara Nayaki.

The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised by Tirugnanasambandar. It also belongs to the Pancha Aranya Sthalams, five temples in the Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Tiruvarur region each linked to a forest; this one is the vilva vanam. The other four stand at Tirukkarugavur, Avalivanallur, Aridwaramangalam and Alangudi.
