The story

Karumbeswarar Temple stands at Koilvenni in Tiruvarur district, a place known historically as Tiruvenni. Shiva is worshipped here as Karumbeswarar and his consort Parvati as Soundaranayagi. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, praised in the Tevaram by Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar.

The name comes from karumbu, Tamil for sugarcane, and the linga is shaped like sugarcane stems tied in a bunch. Devotees believe that offering sugar to the deity here will cure people with diabetes.
