Koneswarar Temple is a Shiva temple in the town of Kudavasal in Tamil Nadu. Shiva is worshipped here as Koneswarar, with the goddess Periyanayagi. The temple is a maadakoil, built on a raised base so that elephants could not reach the sanctum, and it is counted among seventy such temples attributed to Kochengat Chola, a Chola king who is also one of the 63 Nayanmars. Sambandar sang of it in the Tevaram, making it a Paadal Petra Sthalam, and Arunagirinathar also praised it.
One legend says the top of Brahma's pot, which held the seed of all life during the great deluge, fell here. Another tells how Garuda, recovering a pot of nectar, dug into an anthill and found a lingam beneath it; a scar on the lingam is believed to have been left by him. The temple has an 80 ft rajagopuram, two prakarams and the Amirtatheertham tank, with shrines to Murugan, Saraswati, Surya and Chandra. Arudra Darisanam and Maasi Magam are its main festivals.
