The story

Vibhutipura Lake is in the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited suburb of south-east Bengaluru and forms part of the Bellandur–Varthur series of lakes. A lake here goes back to the Hoysalas, and a 14th-century inscription records that a village and a tank were created here. The forest department once maintained it, before charge passed to the Bangalore Development Authority and then to the city corporation.

Sewage, dumping and encroachment drew local people into its care, and residents' associations together with the group VIKAS have campaigned for its revival; a fence and a walking path were built, and recreational use has grown. The lake is seasonal, and when dry its bed has served for cricket and grazing. In April 2023 a big clearance of water hyacinth let it fill again, though sewage still enters and a planned treatment plant remains unfinished.
