The story

Vedapureeswarar Temple stands at Therazhundur, historically Thirunedungalam, in Mayiladuthurai district. Shiva is worshipped as Vedapureeswarar and his consort as Soundaraambigai, and a shrine to Madesvarar stands on the right side of the temple.

It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised by Tirugnanasambandar in the Tevaram, and is counted among the temples on the banks of the Kaveri. The Archaeological Survey of India has recently recorded Chola inscriptions here, including two Tamil records on the door jamb in 12th-century script, from the 34th and 44th years of the reign of Kulottunga Chola I.
