Uthavedeeswarar Temple, also known as the Sonnavararivar temple, stands in the town of Kuthalam in Mayiladuthurai district. It is the 154th Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 37th of the Chola country's Shiva temples on the south bank of the Kaveri, and its hymns come from Appar, Sundarar and Sambandar.
The temple legend says Parvati took birth beside the Kaveri as the sage Bharata Muni's daughter, and that Shiva rose from the lingam to keep his word and marry her, hence the name Sonnavararivar, the one who kept his promise. Shiva is also said to have left his sandals here before setting out for Kailash, and Sundarar is believed to have been cured of an illness after bathing in the temple tank. The temple faces west behind a five-tier rajagopuram, and the goddess has her own enclosure with a three-tier tower. A Rajaraja I inscription records Sembiyan Mahadevi giving land for the temple's upkeep. The temple is also associated with the uddhala tree.
