The story

Vandurai Nathar Temple is a Shiva temple at Cherivadi Vaikal in Tiruvarur district, a place known in the past as Tiruventhurai. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, praised by Sambandar in the Tevaram, and the goddess here is called Vel Nedunganni.

Its legend concerns the sage Bhringi, who worshipped Shiva alone and ignored Parvati. Angered, she cursed him and tried to stop his worship, so he became a bee, vandu in Tamil, and slipped into the ear of Shiva's image. Within the complex are shrines to Surya, Chandra, Shani, Bhairava, Brahma, Ardhanarisvara, Ganesha and Murugan.
