Vandiyur Mariamman Temple in Madurai is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman and stands on the bank of the Vaigai River, about 3 km from the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
Near the temple lies a tank used during its festivals, linked to the Vaigai by underground channels that bring in its water. Twelve granite steps, built under the Madurai Nayaks, lead down to the water. At the centre of the tank stands the Maiya Mandapam, or central mandapam, with a Vinayakar temple and a garden on it, so that the shrine sits on an island within the tank.
