The story

The Goripalayam Mosque and dargah stands on the northern bank of the Vaigai River in Madurai, its green tomb visible from the A.V. Bridge. The area takes its name from the Persian gor, grave. It holds the tombs of two brothers, Sultan Alauddin Badusha and Sultan Shamsuddin Badusha, who came from Oman in the 13th century and ruled the northern part of Madurai, as well as an 'invisible grave' of Ghaibi Sultan, said to have come to India to spread Islam.

The dome is about 21 metres across and 6 metres high, said to be made from a single block of stone from the Azhagar hills; it is said that Thirumalai Nayak built it for his Muslim subjects. An old Tamil inscription on the grounds records that the sultans' descendants bought the dargah land from King Koon Pandiyan for a measure of gold, along with six villages to support it. People come from across Tamil Nadu to seek blessings here.
