The story

Tamukkam Palace in Madurai takes its name from the Tamil word for a summer house. Built around 1670, it served as the summer palace of Rani Mangammal, who ruled the Madurai Nayak kingdom as queen regent.

After the British took it over, the palace served as the District Collectors' official residence. Today the building is home to the Mahatma Gandhi Museum, so a visit to the museum also means a visit to the old Nayak summer palace.
