The story

Upper Bagh Devi Temple, also called Maa Upara Bag Devi or Byaghra Devi Temple, honours the goddess Bagh Devi, a form of Shakti, in Kulada, Ganjam district, Odisha. It is described as among the most venerated Shakti shrines in southern Odisha. A second Bagh Devi shrine lower down, by the road at the hill's foot, serves pilgrims who struggle with the climb, and temples to Jagannath, Mausimaa and Ratneswar Mahadev are close by.

Local tradition tells of three sisters who quarrelled over coconuts and divided the region by throwing lota vessels, each marking a temple site, one said to lie below a pond. In another version the 17th-century poet Upendra Bhanja was told in a dream to build the three temples. Kulada is his birthplace and is tied to Bhanja Sanskruti, the cultural legacy of his dynasty; ruins of an old fort can still be seen in the area.
