The story

Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, sometimes called Tungareshwar National Park, covers more than 85 sq km of plateau in Palghar district, east of Vasai and Virar and north of Mumbai. Declared in 2003 and run by the Sanjay Gandhi National Park division at Borivali, it forms a corridor between that park and Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, and rises to about 665 m above sea level.

About 600 plant species, more than 250 kinds of birds, 150 butterflies and 36 species of reptiles and amphibians have been recorded, and wildlife specialists lead bird walks and nature outings here. A temple about 3 km from the base draws pilgrims, and another working temple lies roughly 11 km in. The climb to the top is about 11 km from the main gate on the Vasai side, or about 8 km from Parol near Vajreshwari, over rocky ground with little shade, and the calls of gray langurs carry along the way.
