This tomb in Mehrauli, south-west of the Qutub Minar, holds Adham Khan, a general of Akbar and son of the emperor's wet nurse Maham Anga. In 1562 Adham Khan killed the minister Ataga Khan at Agra Fort, and Akbar had him thrown from the ramparts. His mother died of grief soon after, and both were buried here in a tomb built that same year.
The tomb sits on the old walls of Lal Kot, on a terrace ringed by an octagonal wall with low corner towers. Its domed octagonal chamber follows Lodi and Sayyid models, and the narrow passages inside its thick walls earned it the nickname Bul-bulaiyan, or labyrinth. In the 1830s a British officer turned it into a home and removed the graves; it later served as a rest house, police station and post office before Lord Curzon ordered it cleared and restored.
