The story

The Tirumeni Azhagar Temple is a Shiva shrine at Mahendirapalli in Mayiladuthurai district, on the southern bank of the Kollidam river. Shiva is worshipped here as Tirumeni Azhagar and his consort as Vadivambigai. The village is believed to take its name from Mahendra, who is said to have worshipped Shiva at this spot.

The saint Tirugnanasambandar sang of the deity in the early medieval Tevaram, and the temple is therefore one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Shaiva canon. He composed a verse describing the deity of Mahendrapalli. It is also counted among the temples on the northern banks of the Kaveri.
