The story

The Tipu Sultan Masjid, also known as the Shaheed Tipu Sultan Masjid, stands on Prince Anwar Shah Road in the Tollygunge area of Kolkata and serves Sunni worshippers. It was raised in memory of Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore, by his son Prince Gholam Mohammed. After Tipu died fighting the East India Company, the British sent his family into exile in Calcutta; Gholam Mohammed arrived as a child and grew up to take part in many public works in the city.

He built the mosque between 1852 and 1860, repeating the design of the Tipu Sultan Mosque on Dharamtalla Street, which had been completed in 1842. The mosque today follows the Barelvi and Sufi traditions.
