The story

Thiruvettisvarar Temple stands in Thiruvettisvaranpettai, part of Triplicane in Chennai, and can be reached from a Vinayaka temple beside the post office on Triplicane High Road. The area was also called Thirupattinam. Appar sang of the shrine, which makes it a Vaippu Sthalam.

Shiva is worshipped as Thiruvettisvarar, flanked by Somaskanda and the goddess Maragathavalli, also called Senbagambikai. The front mandapa of the Subramania shrine has inscriptions of Murugan hymns such as Kandar Anuboothy, Kanda Shasti Kavasam, Pamban Swamigal's Shanmuga Kavacham and Ramalinga Swamigal's Deivamanimalai, along with stucco figures of Murugan's six abodes. Other shrines honour Vinayaka, Virabhadra, Balasubramania and the saints Gnanasambandar, Appar, Sundarar, Manikkavacakar and Sekkizhar.
