The story

The Bahram Jung Mosque, also called the Nandanam Mosque, is a Sunni mosque in the Nandanam neighbourhood of Chennai, beside Anna Salai. It was built between 1789 and 1795 by the poet Bahram Jung, full name Muhammad Abdullah Qadir Nawaz Khan Bahadur, who served at the court of Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, Nawab of the Carnatic.

The poet and Hafiz Ahmad Khan, his younger brother and builder of the mosque named after him, ran up such heavy expenses at the cost of the Carnatic state that, once Umdat ul-Umara, who followed Wallajah as Nawab, had died, the East India Company seized their lands. The mosque was completed in the Mughal style and is decorated with many fine carvings and ornate details that reflect the grandeur of Mughal-period Islamic design.
