The Tamboor Basavanna Temple stands in the quiet village of Tamboor in Kalghatgi taluk, Dharwad district. It is dedicated to Basavanna, Nandi, the sacred bull and mount of Shiva, and is believed to date from Chalukya times.
The main shrine holds a regal image of Basavanna, and the sanctum is surrounded by sculptures of gods, goddesses and celestial figures with scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Carved pillars, wall reliefs and a decorated entrance show Chalukyan workmanship. Villagers tell of Basavanna appearing to save them from disaster, and of a farmer whose faith brought a rich harvest to the whole village. Maha Shivaratri draws thousands of devotees for night vigils, special pujas and performances. The Kavala caves are close by, and Unkal Lake and Dharwad Fort make easy side trips.
