The Hebich Memorial Church in the centre of Dharwad grew out of the work of the Basel Mission, which began its activities in the town in 1845. It was raised in memory of the missionary Hebich, who worked in the region in the 19th century and is remembered for persisting despite language and cultural barriers.
The building mixes Gothic and Romanesque elements with local touches. Outside there are spires, arched windows and carved detailing, and inside, stained glass windows with biblical scenes colour the sanctuary. Services are held regularly, and the church runs community work in education and healthcare and programmes supporting women and poorer families. D R Bendre Bhavan, the Chandramouleshwara Temple, Dharwad Fort and the Indira Gandhi Glass House Garden are within reach.
