01 — The story

The story

All Saints Church in Dharwad was built in 1869, during British rule, to serve British staff stationed in the town, with Rev. W. G. Farrington overseeing its design and construction. It remains a place of worship for local Christians and a reminder of the colonial period in Dharwad.

The building is in the Gothic Revival style, with pointed arches, ribbed vaults and buttresses, and its outer walls are of locally quarried stone. Tall ceilings and stained glass windows showing saints and Bible scenes fill the interior with coloured light. A pipe organ put in early in the 20th century is still played at services. Local stories tell of a mysterious light seen over the site before building began, and of a hidden tunnel to Dharwad Fort, which is a short walk away.
