Takht Kesgarh Sahib, also known as Kesgarh Qila, stands at Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district, Punjab, about 40 km from Rupnagar and 78 km from Chandigarh. It is one of the five Takhts of Sikhism and marks the spot where the Khalsa Panth was founded by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Anandpur Sahib was also home to Guru Tegh Bahadur, and Guru Gobind Singh spent 25 years there.
The site began as one of the forts the Guru built around the town to guard the Sikhs against the hill Rajas and the Mughals; the others were Anandgarh, Lohgarh, Holgarh, Fatehgarh and Taragarh, all joined by earthworks and tunnels. In the 20th century Kar Seva renovators cleared the original fort structures and raised marble gurdwaras in their place, so the Takht seen today is a modern building on the historic site.
