The story

Swarnapureeswarar Temple is a Shiva temple at Semponnarkoil in Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu, a place also called Tiruchemponpalli and known in older times as Lakshmipuri and Indirapuri. Shiva is worshipped here as Swarnapureeswarar, and his consort as Suguntha Kundalambikai. It is reckoned among the temples built along the banks of the Kaveri.

Both Sambandar and Thirunavukkarasar sang of this shrine, which places it among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Tevaram, the early medieval Tamil Saivite hymns. One of Sambandar's verses pictures the Lord of Semponpalli with the goddess at his left, an axe in his hand and hair shining like golden thread, and promises that sorrow will not reach those who worship him.
