The story

Suyambulingaswamy Temple is a Shiva temple at Uvari in Tirunelveli district, on the Tiruchendur–Kanyakumari road. Shiva is worshipped here as Swayambunathar, a self-manifested lingam, and the goddess as Brahma Sakthi; throughout the month of Margazhi (December–January) the sun's rays fall on the deity.

Devotees believe that bathing in the sea for 41 days and praying here cures disease and helps those with physical and mental disabilities. In thanks, many bring baskets of sea sand, 11 or 41 of them, and leave it by the temple, and some offer naga images. Worship follows a set order: a bath in the sea and then in the freshwater pond, followed by prayers to Kanni Vinayaga, Suyambulinga, Brahma Sakthi Amman, Essaki Amman, Munnodi and Sastha. Festivals include Vaikasi Visakam, Thaipusam and Panguni Uthiram, and the temple opens 6 am–1 pm and 4–8 pm.
