The story

Sursagar Lake, also called Chand Talao, sits in the middle of Vadodara and was rebuilt in stone masonry in the 18th century. It holds water all year, and when it overflows, underwater gates release the surplus into the Vishvamitri River. A concrete wall around the edge serves as seating, and boating is offered on the lake.

In the centre stands a 111-foot statue of Sarveshwar Mahadev, a form of Shiva, put up between 1996 and 2002 by a committee founded by local legislator Yogesh Patel and set on 23 piles driven 78 feet deep. At its unveiling it was regarded as India's tallest statue of Shiva. About 17.5 kg of gold was used to gild it, and it was dedicated to the city on Mahashivratri in 2023.
