The Mahakali Temple sits at the top of Pavagadh Hill, about 800 metres above sea level, inside the UNESCO-listed Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park. Dating from the 10th-11th centuries, it drew pilgrims even before Champaner grew into a city. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas; legend holds that Sati's toe fell here and Mahakali appeared at that moment.
Pilgrims climb a 5 km forest footpath or take a cable car from the last road point. Past the fortifications and a wide courtyard with two old sacrificial altars, the sanctum holds Kalika Mata as a red-painted head, the mukhwato, with full images of Mahakali and yantras of Bahuchara. The spire once held a shrine of the Sufi saint Sadan Shah Pir, which was moved during the 2022 redevelopment.
