The story

The Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is an ancient Shiva temple in the old city of Kurukshetra, Haryana. Shiva here is the presiding deity of the old city of Sthaneshwar, today's Thanesar, and Pushpabhuti, founder of the Vardhana dynasty, is said to have named his capital after him. The present building was raised by Raghunath Rao Peshwa.

Tradition holds that the Pandavas, together with Krishna, prayed to Shiva here and received his blessing for victory in the Mahabharata war. Right beside the temple a gurdwara marks the spot near the Sthaneshwar Tirtha where Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, stayed.
