The story

Sthalasayana Perumal Temple, known too as the Arulmaakadal Perumal Temple, is a Vishnu temple at Tirusirupuliyur, 2 km from Kollumangudi, 17 km from Mayiladuthurai and 10 km from Karaikal. Tirumangai Alvar sang of it, and it counts among the 108 Divya Desams. Vishnu is worshipped as Sthalasayana Perumal and Lakshmi as Thirumagal Nachiyar.

Legend says the sages Vyaghrapada and Patanjali, bound for Srirangam, lost their way and came here, where Vishnu appeared to them; as they were too old to see his great Ranganatha form clearly, he took a small reclining form called Bala Sayanam. The name is read as 'small' (siru) and 'tiger' (puli), after the sage who worshipped in tiger form. With Srirangam, it is one of only two Divya Desams where Vishnu reclines facing south. Garuda is believed never to fly over the place after a quarrel with Adisesha. A granite wall encloses the shrines, entered through a four-tiered rajagopuram, and the Brahmotsavam in Vaikasi is the main festival.
