The story

Meganathar Temple is a Shiva temple at Thirumeeyachur in Tiruvarur district, where Shiva is worshipped as Meganathaswami and his consort as Lalithambika. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva shrines praised in the Tevaram hymns of Tirugnanasambandar, and the Ilamkovil Sakalabhuvaneswarar Temple stands within the same premises.

The temple is regarded as the place where the Lalita Sahasranama was composed and where Hayagriva taught it to the sage Agastya. It is also considered the birthplace of Garuda, Vishnu's mount, and of Aruna, charioteer of the sun god: according to the temple legend, Kashyapa's wives Vinata and Katru worshipped Shiva here and were granted these sons, and Aruna later worshipped here before becoming Surya's charioteer.
