01 — The story

The story

St. Thomas Orthodox Syrian Church stands in the Cantonment of Prayagraj, the former Allahabad. Designed by the British military engineer Horace Barnet, it was built as a garrison church for the soldiers stationed there, and on 8 February 1889 Ralph Johnson, Bishop of Calcutta, consecrated it as St. David's Garrison Church. It was dedicated to Queen Victoria in 1897.

What sets the building apart is that it is made entirely of wood, a rarity among the city's prominent colonial churches, which are mostly stone and brick. It has a single spire, sits on a raised wooden base and is laid out east to west. On 1 April 1948, after independence, it passed to the Indian Church Trustees in Calcutta and later to the Malankara Syrian Church, which gave it its present name. It is now a parish of the Delhi Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, with the Holy Qurbana celebrated in Malayalam.
