Anand Bhawan, whose name means abode of joy, is the Prayagraj house where Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, lived with his family. His father Motilal Nehru had it built after the family's older mansion on the same grounds, Swaraj Bhawan, was turned into the headquarters of the Indian National Congress. Motilal Nehru's funeral was held here in 1931, and leaders of the freedom movement often stayed under its roof.
Today the house is a museum. Visitors see Jawaharlal Nehru's room, where a plain charpoy sits beside shelves full of books, the family dining room, and a gallery of black and white photographs showing Nehru with other national leaders, Motilal Nehru, and the family in relaxed moments. The Jawahar Planetarium, with its dome, stands within the grounds and runs shows on stars and planets. Swaraj Bhawan, where Indira Gandhi was born, is a short walk away.
