01 — The story

The story

The Allahabad Museum, also called the Prayagraj Museum, stands inside Chandrashekhar Azad Park and is ranked as a national-level museum. It began in 1931 with a small set of model birds and animals and has since grown into one of the main collections of history and art in northern India.

The introductory gallery displays objects from before independence, among them the pistol of the revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad, and separate galleries cover the freedom movement, Gandhi and Nehru. Archaeology rooms trace cultures from the Harappan period to the Guptas, and a natural history section shows the country's wildlife. The art holdings include stone sculpture, Rajasthani miniatures, works of the Bengal School, terracottas from Kaushambi and 19 canvases by the Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. Its library of about 25,000 books includes volumes of the Loeb Classical Library of Greek and Latin texts.
