The story

St. Mary's Soonoro Syriac Orthodox Church at Meenangadi in Wayanad is a Marian pilgrim centre of the Syriac Orthodox Church, under the Evangelistic Association of the East and directly under the Patriarch of Antioch. It grew out of the movement of Syrian Christian settlers from Travancore into Malabar that began in the 1920s, and the schism in the Malankara Church: after some parishioners were barred from the sacraments in 1958, a temporary prayer shed went up under the leadership of K. O. Varghese, and the church's foundation stone followed on 1 February 1958.

It was the first church in the Malabar region to observe the 8 Day Lent, and the Ettu Nombu Perunnal from 1 to 8 September draws thousands. Relics of Patriarch Ignatius Elias III were given to the church, and a Holy Soonoro, linked to the tradition of Mary's girdle, was installed on 28 April 1991. The church was named a Marian Pilgrim Centre in 2006 and marked its diamond jubilee in 2018.
