The story

St. Mary's Church stands inside the Fort St. George complex in Chennai. Work on this Anglican church began on 25 March 1678, Lady Day, which gave it its name, and it was consecrated on 28 October 1680 by Reverend Richard Portman, with the garrison firing guns and cannon to mark the event. Its design is credited to either Edward Foule, the fort's Master Gunner, or William Dixon, its Chief Gunner.

The church was built to withstand attack, with walls 5 feet thick and a rounded roof about 4 feet thick, shaped so that cannonballs would glance off it; it was the only bombproof building in the fort at the time. Among its possessions is a Bible from 1660, and two curved outside staircases lead up to its western gallery.
