The story

This Catholic church stands on a hillock beside the Western Express Highway at Kashimira, Mira-Bhayandar. Franciscan friars first built it of wood in 1595, between the East Indian villages of Kashi and Mira. A cyclone badly damaged it in 1618; it was rebuilt in 1626 with a parish covering Kashi, Mira and several neighbouring villages, then destroyed again during the Maratha invasion of 1739.

The present church dates from 1926. Its sanctuary rises over the rear arch of the old church, and its sacristy sits over the old sanctuary. The original statue of St Jerome was set on the new altar, while the old cross, which had stood for 386 years, was replaced. Although St Jerome's feast falls on 30 September, the parish celebrates on 26 December, the day the new church opened for worship in 1926.
