The story

St Ignatius Church stands at Puthenthope in Kadinamkulam panchayat, Thiruvananthapuram district. The village values its long history: Francis Xavier is generally believed to have visited around 1543–44 and founded a church here, perhaps in a simple form.

The present church, rebuilt in 1989, copies St. Joseph's Cathedral in Thiruvananthapuram city; Pope John Paul II blessed its foundation stone during his 1986 visit to the city. In front is a grotto of Mary whose statue a local resident brought from Lourdes. Nearby are a parochial house in traditional Kerala style and the parish community hall at Puthenthope junction. The church is the centre of the village's religious and social life, with Christmas, Easter and other feasts celebrated here.
