The story

St. George Church stands at Pallikavala junction, on the Kottayam-Ernakulam road, in Thalayolaparambu, a town in the Kottayam district of Kerala. St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, who was Vicar General for the Syrian Catholics at the time, founded the first church here. Under Fr Joseph D. Thekkinen it was rebuilt, and Cardinal Joseph Parecattil inaugurated the new building on 31 December 1972. A renovation followed in 2022 for the golden jubilee.

It is said to have been the first pilgrim centre to hold a novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, and thousands still come for it every Saturday. Feasts of St. Sebastian, St. George and Mother Mary are also held here. The town around it has its own interest, including a market founded by Velu Thampi Dalawa and the Pundareekapuram temple, whose sanctum walls are covered with painted scenes from Hindu myth.
