The story

Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple in Tirupati is a Vaishnava temple founded in the 12th century and dedicated to Vishnu as Govindaraja. Its eastern entrance is marked by a seven-storey rajagopuram about 50 metres tall, carved with Ramayana scenes and figures of Matla Anantharaja and his wives. In the main sanctum Vishnu reclines in yoga nidra, facing east, flanked by Sridevi and Bhudevi.

The complex has two enclosures. The outer one holds shrines to Pundarika Valli and the Alvars, while the inner one contains the main shrine along with smaller shrines to Krishna and Andal. The Kalyana Venkateswara shrine has neatly finished colonettes and projecting yali figures, and a pavilion nearby has grey-green granite columns under a wooden roof.
