01 — The story

The story

Singsur Ani Gompa, a home for Buddhist nuns, lies near Tawang, at about 9,900 feet above sea level. Counted among the older gompas of the area, it was brought back to life in the 1960s by Rev. Gonpatse Rinpoche, and the earlier gompa still survives beside the huts where the nuns live. Up to 30 nuns stay here.

The building is plain: a hut-shaped structure of stone, decorated with inscriptions and colourful prayer flags rather than elaborate art. The nuns follow a simple routine of morning prayers and chanting, study of scriptures, shared chores such as cleaning and cooking, offerings of flowers, lamps and incense, and evening prayers.
