The story

Singanallur Lake, one of nine large lakes in Coimbatore, covers about 1.15 sq km with an average depth of 4.25 m. Canals from the Noyyal River feed it, along with the Sanganur drain and sewage; two sluice gates release water, and since 2010 pipes have linked it to Valankulam Lake to carry off floodwater. The railway between Podanur and Irugur crosses it.

Despite pollution and water hyacinth, the lake supports rich wildlife. More than 110 bird species have been recorded, with spot-billed pelicans, painted and openbill storks, ibis, spot-billed ducks, teal and black-winged stilts among the migrants, and butterflies such as the common Mormon, joker and glassy tiger. Encroachments were cleared in 2015 to prepare it for tourism, and the boat house, opened in 2005 and closed in 2009, was renovated after the corporation's 2014 desilting plan.
