The story

Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve covers about 1,408 square kilometres of forest in Erode district, where the Western and Eastern Ghats meet. Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2008 and enlarged in 2011, when it became the largest in Tamil Nadu, it was notified in 2013 as the state's fourth tiger reserve under Project Tiger. It spans parts of Talavady, Sathyamangalam and Gobichettipalayam taluks.

The reserve is an important wildlife corridor within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, joining the Sigur Plateau, the Mudumalai and Bandipur parks and the Billigiriranga Swamy Temple and Cauvery sanctuaries. Camera traps and DNA studies around 2011 confirmed that tigers were living here, and numbers grew from about 25 in 2011 to 80 by 2018. In 2022 the reserve received the TX2 award, given by WWF and partner conservation agencies, for this increase in tigers.
