The story

Arulmigu Koniamman Temple stands in the heart of Coimbatore, near Town Hall, on the Noyyal River's north bank. It is dedicated to Koniamman, a form of Parvati, who is regarded as the guardian deity of the city, and with the Perur Pateeswarar Temple it is one of Coimbatore's two historic temples. It was built in the 11th century by the descendants of the chieftain Kovan; the goddess he worshipped, Koyamma, is thought to have become Koniamma, and the city's old name, Koyampuththoor, may come from her.

An 84-foot gopuram, described as the tallest in the region, was completed by the state government in 2011 at a cost of Rs 1.75 crore. The temple car festival in the Tamil month of Panguni is the biggest local festival in Coimbatore, followed by the goddess's marriage ceremony and a float festival.
