01 — The story

The story

The Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Bhuj was established by Swaminarayan, founder of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, at the spot where he met local holy men on his visit to the town. It stands near the Ramkund stepwell and Alfred High School and is run by the Nar Narayan Dev Gadi. The January 2001 earthquake destroyed part of the old temple, though its idols were not damaged; rebuilding began in 2003 and took seven years.

The new temple, raised on a large podium, is built mainly of Makrana and Ambaji marble with gold detailing. It has a central dome, 25 smaller domes and 258 carved pillars. Images of Ghanshyam and Sukh Shaiya are among those inside, and a 3D film tells the story of Swaminarayan's life.
