Shri Dev Rameshwar Temple, in Rameshwar Wadi village of Devgad taluka, Sindhudurg district, is a 16th-century Shiva temple. Its most striking feature is the way in: a passage some 250 yards long, sunk fifty feet deep into the rock. The main image, which shows the god with four arms, seated on a bull, is of solid silver and said to weigh a hundred kilograms.
The temple grew in stages. In the early 18th century Kanhoji Angre built the stone inner shrine around the original pindi, and later Sambhaji and Sankhoji Angre added a mandap on four carved wooden pillars, a circumambulation path and gates on the west and south. In 1780 Gangadhar Bhanu, Subhedar of the Vijaydurg region, added a large hall with 20 carved wooden pillars, and the naval chief Anandrao Dhulap built gates on the north and east, the eastern one reached through a cutting in a small hill. The temple building covers about 4,025 square feet.
