Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary covers forested hills where Kolhapur district meets Sindhudurg. For many years the area was a hunting reserve of the Maharaja of Kolhapur, and in 1985 it was declared a sanctuary. It is closely tied to the Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary, the first sanctuary notified in Maharashtra and widely known as the Bison Sanctuary.
Gaur, or Indian bison, are the main attraction, and the dense woods also shelter sambar, barking deer, wild boar, leopards and Indian giant squirrels. Birdwatchers look for the Malabar whistling thrush, the orange-headed thrush and the grey hornbill. Visitors explore on forest trails or by jeep and bus safari. Radhanagari Dam and its backwaters are nearby, and a Bison museum displays specimens of the local wildlife.
