01 — The story

The story

Shiv Shakti Dham, also called Gopalmath Shiv Mandir, is a recent Hindu temple in the industrial city of Durgapur. It was opened in February 2021 and is among the biggest temples in the city. Worship here is offered jointly to Shiva and Shakti, who stand for the male and female principles of creation.

The main shrine has carved surfaces and images of the deities, and the floors are laid in marble. Within the grounds is a man-made pond filled with water brought from the Ganga. Devotees come for prayers and rituals, and the evening aarti, held at set times each day with devotional singing and chanting, draws the biggest gatherings. Separate shrines to Shiva and to Shakti, along with sessions of meditation and yoga, make it a quiet stop for both worship and reflection.
